Dear Sir,

In the first let me express a sincere thanks for the inclusion of the subject “Drunks of Port Deposit” with in your blog, now we citizens will have an appropriate place for inclusion of commentary on this subject. However in the second this has created a dilemma for myself as I have put much undecided thought into posting commentary on our up coming town elections, either here in “Drunks of Port Deposit" or under the “Mayor and Council Election 2007” subject header. One area of discussion that I do find myself secure in posting here is your proposition that Port Deposit = The Original Mayberry. This of course brings found memories of the Andy Griffin show and that lovable town drunk Otis. I would suggest that we as a Town make every effort to entice Otis to move here and run for high public office. His service on council or appointment to a Town committee would of course be a positive move from the present situation. I look forward to your call for volunteers for a Draft Otis committee.

Your Humble servant,

Amicus Publicus

i for one want to say happy st. valentines day in 3 days.
I am not a drunk, but i do like the local prices (ok, some prices)
as well i am not in politics so i am a good drunk i guess.
is the rule that whne you run for office or get in you have to stop visiting the pubs?
hmm?
what about Winston Churchill?
Bill Clinton you know the great drinkers of their day?
they couldn't run for office in this town? - just asking

There's nothing against anyone visiting the local pubs,it's that there is a lot of so called town business being discussed there that should be discussed strictly on a professional basis , like at the town hall where it is meant to be discussed, that is what it is there for.Town hall meetings are meant for town hall exclusively, correct? Not over a cold beverage.

Opinions,
Being one who has lived in a small town for quite some time and has been involved with the politics of it all, I do not see how you can stop people from being people.
Whether in church, on this forum, in the local eateries, people will talk.
Maybe decisions should not be made outside of the Town Hall, but normal conversation seems healthy.
It is not like there isn't allot to talk about.

Possibly one of the challenges this town faces is the reoccurring high-water that taxes our resources so that whenever we go 2 steps forward, we wind up 3 steps back.

More meetings, not once a month may be one answer.
But so too those who have been in office or are planning to run for office - take heed, like the paparazzi, local citizens will dog you and in many cases they have a right to get more direct answers then to be put on a 3 minute time clock for comment at the once a month meeting. (that is a sad approach to snuff comment)

As well, there so many things are proposed promised and then forgotten by those in power from month to month much less year to year.
It is tough, you need cooperation from those who can vote. As well there is always one fly in the ointment that has rights too.

Unfortunately it is not a full time job, but the needs of this town, dictate that follow through is a must.
The cycle of the history of Port Deposit has been no different I suspect.
I say that a little heat and sometimes libations lead to results

"more battles have been fought and won over the dinner (and bar?) table than on any battlefield."

All discourse is good - if open to differing opinions.
And now you just read my take on it.

-My name is unimportant here.
(This is a decent idea for comment, hopefully the comment will lead to something more positive)

Re: Prophesizes of Sir Winston Churchill

Dear Sir:

As you know there is much interest in all that is historical in our town. As the question was raised weather Sir Winston Churchill could stand for election in our town due to his love of the grape, we were led to perform some research on the matter. Imagine our surprise upon finding the following commentary from Mr. Churchill: “so they go on in a strange paradox, decided to be undecided, resolved to be irresolute, adamant for drift, solid for fluidity, all-powerful to be impotent”. As there can be little doubt that Mr. Churchill was referring to our town’s present elected body we are left to conclude that Mr. Churchill had the ability to prophesize. As this ability of Mr. Churchill is thus far unknown to history we suggest this new information be forwarded to the appropriate historical group for further research. Perhaps the common propensity of both Mr. Churchill and some of our elected officials for inebriation was responsible for the formers prophesy.

I am your humble servant,

Amicus Publicus

PS. A similar question was raised of Bill Clinton’s ability for election in our town. We are at present researching the matter, however at this time we do not believe Mr. Clinton to be a Drunk, just to look and act like one.

I have met many who seem drunk with Port Deposit.

In that respect it is not the drunks that makes the town , but raher the town which make some drunk about it.

they should put voting booth in the local taverns then maybe everyone would vote.

why vote?
there isn't even enough candidates for the positions

Not because they are in the pubs.

but because this council has proven that it takes only one apple to stop progress,
so why bother?
at least in the pubs thing get accomplish and deals made by camaraderie.

Some council members are like the wolf tree – prickly to touch and nothing grows near them.

In speaking of questionable frames of mind.

Whom decided on the Jetty height and rails?
One would have to know that the projectiles that descend the river on flood or open gates
could-can-will remove the rails in
one reasonable torrent.

Please get insurance for this reality of nature else we may just be left with half a Jetty.
